Abstract
The 1999 Boiling Pot yearbook featured a two-page spread about a racist letter and dorm fire on campus in September of 1998. Referred to as the “Incident”, the spread includes photos of the burned bunk beds, President Jones speaking, students gathered for the President’s speech, and a candlelight vigil. It also includes a quote from a letter written by other Black students on campus. It reads in part, “This incident is not only a collective attack on us and all students of color, but it is also a threat on one student’s life. Nevertheless, we stand unshaken by this cowardly act. In fact, the action has strengthened us as individuals and unified us as a body.”
