Abstract
This photo from an unidentified student’s album is captioned “K.P. ‘Majestic’ Vaudeville 1915.” The name of the show was likely derived from Kalamazoo’s Majestic Theatre, a vaudeville house located on South Street. The image shows all the members of the women’s Kappa Pi society who performed acts on the stage of Bowen Hall on March 17, 1915.
Vaudeville shows were popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and they consisted of a variety of different acts such as dances, comical readings, skits, music, and blackface performances. The April 1915 issue of the Index states: “The orchestra was in black-face and was a credit to the leader, Miss Mildred Tanis [Class of 1918].” Altogether, eight performers in this photo appear in blackface masks. The six women kneeling in the second row, two of whom hold instruments, were most likely performers in the orchestral act referred to in the Index article.
This same photo also appears in the scrapbook of Donald E. Wallace, a member of the Class of 1918, along with the program for the event.
