Abstract

Given the importance of food in the livelihood of mankind, it is imperative to understand that not all people have the same availability and access to the food that is necessary to their survival. This study using qualitative research methods resulted in various themes including a . broken food system, strategies for survival and the community that develops as a result in the lives of the African American women that participated in the study. Each of the themes revealed in this study aid in understanding what some individuals who are experiencing food insecurity endure and provide some suggestions for improvement that need to take place.
