Abstract
During the summer of 2022, I worked on my senior individualized project (SIP) by shadowing a Kalamazoo College alumna called Sherin John, MPH, PA who is a primary care provider specializing in cardiology at Bronson Methodist Hospital located in downtown Kalamazoo, Michigan. During the shadowing experience, the role I played was a pre-physician assistant student observing as a job shadow. When entering a patient’s room, Sherin would introduce me to the patient and ask for their permission if it were acceptable for me to observe, and normally, Sherin would introduce me to patients as a pre-physician assistant student of hers. My main work consisted of following Sherin throughout her shift, within the clinic and hospital setting. During this, I kept a very detailed notebook that highlighted the focus of each day. This shadowing experience has allowed me to better understand the collaborative efforts that occur within the healthcare field when it comes to being a PA.
