Abstract
The current economic paradigm of development and
globalization has irreversibly effected the natural environment.
The environment in developing nations is being
disproportionately compromised as a result of population
pressures as well as developed nations tendency to export the
most environmentally damaging industries to developing
nations. Another important, but seemingly unrelated world
issue is that of increasing ethnic conflicts. Recent conflicts in
northern Thailand between lowland Thais and Hmong hilltribes
offer a unique insight into the ways in which environmental
stresses and perceptions of the ‘other’ merge to create ethnic
conflict within the region.
