Abstract
In September of 1995, I acquired an internship position at I/Net, Inc. of Kalamazoo. I was hired as a software tester for one of their products. The product was a web server that ran on the IBM AS/400 platform. It was the first commercially available web server to run on the AS/400 platform. A previous version had already been released, and another was being prepared that fixed a number of defects and added new functionality to the existing product. The World Wide Web, commonly referred to as WWW or the web, has become a growing importance in toady's world. To further understand the behind-the-scenes of the web, I decided to take a deeper look into what ran the web, the web servers; to see what they did and how they worked. In the following sections, web servers, communication protocols, authentication problems, and secured web servers are discussed.
