dc.description.abstractThis was an experiment imitating eutrophication of a stream using periphyton and a grazing snail common to the Great Lakes region named Elimia liviscens (Menke). The purpose of the experiment was to observe if compensatory feeding exists in these snails and the effect of differing periphyton on growth rates. The experiment first manipulated the chemistry of periphyton by adding nutrients as nitrates and phosphates. Periphyton was raised on tiles with four chemical treatments and then fed to biofilm grazing snails. Compensatory feeding was found not to occur with respect to different alga chemistry treatments. Growth rates were shown to be consistent for all but two low quantity treatments lacking phosphorus nutrient additions. The growth rates that were consistently high contained high and low quantity treatments showing a possible limitation of growth rate for Elimia liviscens.en_US
