Abstract
This paper briefly introduces the subject of image compression and outlines the
task of creating a new file storage format on which I worked. My goal was to develop a
process by which a scanned document might be saved using less storage space and
result in a superior image quality than means available. Currently we are only looking
at grayscale images, the issue of color images will be addressed in the future. We
developed a process which separates an image into two component files, one hi-level
and one grayscale, each of which is then compressed with an algorithm appropriate to it.
The two small portions are then recombined to form a decent recreation of the original
