Abstract
It is in the nature of an internship to have two sets of goals. An
employer hires a student to perform a particular job, while the
student may be after a slightly different experience. This Senior
Independent Project was no exception. My goal in taking the job at
Kalamazoo Academy, a private elementary school, was to gain
practical experience in library work beyond the education I received
working for the Kalamazoo College library. This goal was open-ended,
but I quickly discovered that my job entailed more than merely
library science. Jobs at the Academy are defined by the rooms in
which they are generally performed and by the students with whom
they deal, but no employee is limited to the minimum expectations of
the official job description. Rather, each faculty member works as
part of the educational team in any capacity necessary.
