Abstract
Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the first President of Turkey, is widely considered the most significant character in Turkish history. He is renowned in his homeland as Washington, Lincoln, and Kennedy are, as a group, in the United States. His leadership helped to spawn the Young Turk Revolution, which after World War I overthrew the old and diffuse Ottoman Empire. Atatürk was a pivotal character in world history and a Founding Father of the Twentieth century. This thematic biography is divided into three parts based upon Atatürk's age. Each section is distinguished by its themes. Through the separation, various issues surrounding his life evolve as he, too, grows older. For example, Part I's punctuation is confined to periods and commas. The storytelling here is simple, and does not need the pace of other syntax. But as he matures and nears Part TI, periods and commas are prodded by dashes, colons, and semi-colons. The second part's style is an industrial tempo: hydraulic pause in the colon; an assembly-line of semi-colons; and the hot, branding dash. Dashes become the primary punctuation of Part III, and point toward his death and the end of the sentence--to the period.
