Abstract
The following research looks at the different types of play and how they foster
development in children from birth to grade school age. This research focuses on how
the different types of play allow children to learn about their environment and gain an
understanding of what it means to be a social being. This research not only looks as the
psychological research but also the sociological research of George Herbert Mead and
discusses how each adds to the understanding of child development. It concludes by
looking at the ways in which when added together, psychological and sociological
research can benefit parents and teachers understandings of how to aid children in
development. It also looks at the ways that pop culture is moving children away from the
types of play that are so instrumental for their development.
