Abstract

The bullying of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and trans gender (LGBTQ) students in high schools is a prevalent problem that elicits a variety of negative outcomes, including depression and suicidality, in those students who are bullied. This article begins by introducing the unique needs of LGBTQ high school students and their difficulties. It continues by identifying successful techniques employed by high school counselors, with the support of school administrators and staff, to reduce bullying and its effects through support of this student population and education of students and staff. It concludes with a proposal for condensing those techniques into a one day workshop that any school can implement as a part of it's anti-bullying campaign or diversity awareness education program.
