Abstract
The following WESIP paper is divided into three major sections.
Section I, the most important, is divided into three parts. The first part
contains mostly factual information on mutual funds, as well as general
reasons for their popularity. The second part discusses a specific type of
mutual fund, the growth fund, because it is one of the most popular today.
The growth fund portion includes some fundamental economic theory and
the role marketing plays within the success of this particular financial
instrument. Some analysis is given in this part through presentation of
comparative returns on different investments and other relevant data.
Within section one, the final part briefly presents reasons for individuals to
invest, considering various economic circumstances. Section n, the next
major portion of this presentation, gives a brief description of what my
WESIP at Merrill Lynch entailed along with an assortment of journal entries
and examples of exercises I completed. The last major portion, Section m,
reflects upon my internship and how previous coursework at Kalamazoo
College facilitated the adjustment process. Lastly, my career outlook is given
some attention, in light of the experience Merrill Lynch has provided me.
