Abstract
The two types of Down syndrome that involve errors of nondisjunction are Standard
Trisomy 21 and Mosaic. Whereas every somatic cell of a Trisomy 21 individual contains
an extra copy of chromosome 21, somatic cells of Mosaic individuals are a mixture of
cells containing an extra copy of chromosome 21 and "normal" cells. To create a more
receptive world for both types of Down syndrome individuals, the following research is
proposed. ·Thirty Standard Trisomy 21 Down syndrome individuals should be tested and
the results of mental tests compared with 30 Mosaic Down syndrome individuals' results.
Expected results, in accordance with the Fishier and Koch research (1991) include about
10% higher scores among mosaic Down syndrome individuals; results obtained in this
area will be used to determine correlation between cellular genomes and mental capacity.
Mosaic Down syndrome individuals should also have a lower ratio of the typical physical
characteristics of Down syndrome. When results are obtained, Mosaic Down syndrome
individuals will most certainly benefit with more "normal" lifestyles. These lifestyles
will facilitate integration into society by encouraging Down syndrome individuals to be
more productive and to have more enjoyable lives. This will lead the general population
to experience less discomfort near Down syndrome individuals, as well as providing a
more established work force.
