Abstract
It was decided that a study of behavior modification with schizophrenics would perhaps prove most profitable in ascertaining the limits or value of this therapeutic approach. If behavior modification is successful in remission of symptoms or control of their rate of occurrence in schizophrenics, where modification is thought to be most difficult, then this supports behavior modification as a technique. Successful modification of behaviors by environmental control also may support the Skinnerian theory in which it is based, although the lack of success would not necessarily disprove it. Failure of behavior modification to cause remission of symptoms in schizophrenics may be due to the long history of differential reinforcement of the symptoms.
