Abstract
Baron Drawn Steel and Wire Corporation is a manufacturing company producing cold-drawn bar and cold-heading wire products, which are used primarily in auto parts, hydraulic fittings, construction tools and motors. Baron employs the use of factories in both Toledo, Ohio and Canton, Michigan. Each facility bears its own strengths and weaknesses, but they both work towards producing the same finished product.
The wire mill and the bar mill are two different industries, overlapping only because both mills start with the same raw material. During my stay with Baron Steel, from early October until mid-December, I worked exclusively within the bar mill. Therefore, the wire mill will not be referred to in depth in this text.
To familiarize the reader with the cold-finished bar industry, I will give an example of a normal run on one of the machines at Baron Steel. The example will portray the different steps involved in transforming the raw material to a finished good.
