Feeding Habits of the Flagfin Shiner, Pteronotropis signipinnis, of Okaloosa County, Florida
Conn, Sarah J.
Field work was done in Okaloosa County, Florida and the stomach contents of 60 fish were examined. It was hypothesized that P. signipinnis was a bottom feeder and a predator of microcrustaceans. Analysis of the stomach contents found evidence that this fish does feed on microcrustaceans, such as the water mite and water flea. It was also discovered that P. signipinnis feeds on a variety of terrestrial and aquatic insects. 41 % of the diet consisted of Formicidae and nearly 20% of the diet consisted of unknown Diptera.
