Abstract
This paper was intended to examine that connection between democracy and political stability, mainly through the comparison of histories and political institutions. The final and full realization of Tocqueville's fears weighs on me. Is it really possible for the United States to slip from democracy to autocracy with no notice and, more importantly, no reaction from the citizenry? As a believer in democracy and in the concept that democratic principles can create a whole which is greater than the sum of the parts, I find the question disturbing. The composition of this paper is born out of these concerns.
