Women have recently begun to enter the work force in significant numbers in the province of Extremadura in Southwest Spain. In 2001, women are still under-represented in this area, especially in full-time and high status positions. Also, women still perform the vast majority of the housework, even those who work outside of the house as well. In this study, ten youths from Extremadura were interviewed to obtain qualitative-type data about their opinions about the origin of these social roles, how they are changing, and how they fit into the social currents of machismo and feminismo. Analysis revealed that the participants tended to focus on the self-perpetuating nature of specific social roles and they de-emphasized any potential natural tendencies of a certain sex towards their assigned social role.en_US
