dc.description.abstractFranz Josef Strauss was a German politician and premier of Bavaria. As young man he was active in a Roman Catholic youth organization that opposed Hitler's Nazi Party. During World War II he was captured by U.S. forces. After his release in 1945, Strauss helped found the Bavarian Christian Social Union (CSU) and was elected to the parliament in 1949. From 1956 to 1962 he was minister of defense of the Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany), in which role he oversaw West Germany’s rearmament.
