In this paper, I will discuss theories, methods and strategies applied in my internship classroom related to increasing academic and personal engagement in the lessons as well as the classroom community. Over an eleven week period, I student taught full time in a classroom that consisted of more than half special education students. Other challenges to the environment such as behavior management, diversity and time constraints influenced and shaped my research in this topic. My main goals became fostering classroom community and respect as well as increasing productivity. I discovered and will argue that active engagement is possible by a redefining of classroom space and time allowing for more personal attention by the teacher, individual empowerment of the students and choices in assignments to suit multiple interests and intelligences.
