Abstract
There are many parts of the United State’s secondary education foreign language
programs that need to be changed and strengthen. Over the past few decades more and
more emphasis has been put on improving the quality of education students receive with
foreign languages, however there are still giants steps that have yet to be taken. A main
issue as to why students may not be receiving the best education they can is because of
the policies the United States holds for college students desiring to teach a foreign
language. All students are not receiving the type of discipline and knowledge that is
necessary to foster a successful classroom. Emphasis has been put on reading literature
in the foreign language instead of making sure every student is capable of communicating
in the language. Grammar has also not been the main focus in many college classrooms,
which is one facet of a foreign language that a high school teacher needs to be very
knowledgeable about. One school that has made an attempt at changing how a foreign
language is taught is OHS. Through interviews, surveys, observations, and literature
review information was obtained from OHS to better understand how to improve foreign
language classrooms and what high school students need in order to be successful.
