TSHPLC (Troubleshooting High Performance Liquid Chromatography) is an expert advisory system which has been constructed to aid in solving hardware problems which are often encountered in HPLC. The knowledge base of the system was constructed using information obtained from books, magazines, manuals, and experts resident within the Upjohn Company. This knowledge base works in conjunction with M.l, an expert system shell program developed by Teknowledge Inc., Palo Alto, CA., and is designed to run on an IBM PC or a truly compatible computer system. A COMPAQ portable computer was used for development of TSHPLC. The expert system uses a spread sheet and question and answer format to obtain the information needed to apply the knowledge base to a situation and give an appropriate recommendation or solution. While running a consultation TSHPLC has the ability to explain its reasoning simply by issuing a "why" command. TSHPLC has been reviewed by experts in the field of HPLC and is performing satisfactorily. TSHPLC is a rule based backward chaining system which contains approximately 300 rules, and 350 metafacts, and also makes limited use of both forward chaining and fuzzy logic capabilities.
