Motivational Strategies Utilized in Athletics and Their Effective Implementation into the Classroom
In my experiences with high school and college athletics, student athletes are typically very motivated and extremely passionate about sports. The use of motivational techniques used by coaches are often the reason behind such enthusiasm. High school student athletes are driven to perform in games, but also in daily practices and workouts. A coach who is a good motivator can make even the most tedious training activities fun and exciting for athletes. But what drives these athletes to achieve a high performance level on a regular basis? What techniques do the coaches use in order to maintain the kids’ motivation and to have each one exceed his peak potential? As an athlete and a teacher I sought the answers to these questions and attempted to apply them to my mathematics classroom. In this study I explored ways of not only motivating students to study for tests and quizzes but also to help them become actively involved in their daily lessons and to become interested in learning in general. I planned to develop these “coaching strategies” for my classroom not only to create a fun learning environment but to prepare them for life once they left school and took their places in society as functioning adults.
