The Kalamazoo College Master Plan is intended to establish a basis for coordinating physical development decisions to: Improve the campus quality of life; Simplify and enhance campus organization; Establish a positive, unified identity; Improve efficiency in operations and in the use of capital resources; Identify flexible strategies for accommodating possible future growth. The Master Plan's emphasis is on improving the quality of the existing campus environmentand more effectively integrating (1) traditional campus area, surrounding the Quad with (2) newer development to the north and (3) the surrounding residential neighborhood. The Master Plan establishes principles and concepts which provide a clear direction for future development and improvement, while maintaining the flexibility needed to respond to changing needs and conditions. The Master Plan takes a comprehensive look at the components of the campus' physical environment, including development patterns, open space, pedestrian circulation, vehicular circulation, and parking. In doing so, the Plan illustrates how these physical "systems" work: together to create an attractive, understandable, efficiently functioning whole. As a result, the Master Plan demonstrates how individual development decisions can be coordinated more effectively to improve the campus environment. (From Introduction.)en
