Chalcogenide Enhanced Synthesis of Si-N Materials

The addition of chalcogenides to reactions containing silicon and alkali or alkaline earth nitrides has been studied. A new phase of calcium silicon nitride was discovered as the product of the reaction between silicon, calcium nitride, and sulfur. The highest degree of purity of the novel phase has been obtained using a 1:2: 1:1 silicon: sulfur: calcium nitride: sodium azide starting mixture. Structural and approximate compositional analyses were conducted by X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence, energy dispersive spectroscopy, selected area electron diffraction, and thermo-gravimetric analysis.
