Transition metal complexes containing several interacting metal atoms continue to attract a great deal ofresearch interest. Compounds that contain polynuclear transition metal centers as well as bridging ligands are being in a variety of areas including the modeling ofmetalloproteins, medicinal purposes where heavy metal ions are being used in drugs to treat diseases such as cancer and arthritis, and various materials applications. In the research for this thesis, our objective was to examine comparative structural properties ofbinuclear cobalt and nickel complexes, all containing a phenolate-imine macrocyclic ligand and bridging axial ligands with nitrogen and/or oxygen donor atoms. In addition, we examined the oxidation properties ofthe cobalt complexes, resulting in two mixed valence COIICOIIl compounds. All compounds were characterized by infrared and electronic absorption spectroscopy, and X-ray crystallography measurements were performed on three compounds. III
