Construction and Calibration of an AC Susceptometer for Investigation of the Magnetic Exchange Interactions of Binuclear Cobalt(II) and Nickel(II) Macrocyclic Compounds
Abstract
An AC Susceptometer was constructed and calibrated. It was able to reproducibly measure susceptibility in the temperature range from 10 -300 K. It was used to measure the susceptibility of a series of binuclear macrocyclic complexes of formula [LM2(X)nF+/o where M=Ni, Co, Zn. The observed exchange coupling parameter, L was found to be -3.98(2) cm-1 for LC02(PY)4(BF4h, -22.9(3) cm-1 for LNi2(PY)4(BF4h, -1.02(3) for LC02(U02CCH3h
·H20 and -1.47(6) cm-1 for LNh(u-02CCH3h·H20. This indicated the presence of a net antiferromagnetic interaction of varying magnitudes in this series. LC02(H20h(BF4h and LZn2(u-02CCH3h·xH20 were also synthesized, but no conclusions regarding their magnetic properties were drawn.
