Recent research has revealed an increase in body image dissatisfaction among adolescents and adults, specifically females. One group that seems to be particularly at risk for poor body image is female collegiate athletes. Taking a closer look at body image dissatisfaction and its origin, we are able to better understand what affects female body satisfaction. The media have an extremely significant influence on females, especially at the college level. As a result, it is interesting to explore media exposure, and body image satisfaction in conjunction with each other. In addition to the media, pressure from coaches, teammates and parents plays a role in female body image. This paper explores the many reasons why athletes might be at risk for negative body image. It also presents some effective coping strategies that parents and coaches can communicate to their athletes in order to reduce this negative body image.
