Influence of Culture on Ethnic Identity Development, Acculturation, and Educational Ideals Among Latinos
Abstract
This literature review examines and analyzes identity theories
and models from various researchers in the fields of
psychosocial development as well as ethnic identity
development. Acculturation as well as cultural values among
Latinos are also discussed with regard to their influence on
identification as well as educational implications in college or
university settings. A background of Latino history within the
United States in historical and cultural perspectives is also
discussed in order to understand current social dynamics of
Latinos as a whole within the country. Specific countries (i.e.
Mexico, Cuba, Puerto Rico) and the circumstances of
immigration or forced citizenship on behalf of the United
States and their populations are surveyed.
