Possibilities for Culturally-Based Health Care for HIV/AIDS in Uganda
Abstract
•Uganda was selected as the country of focus because of its internationallyrecognized,
multi-sectoral response to HIV/AIDS
•In 1987 the Multi-Sectoral Approach to AIDS Control in Uganda (MACA)
was launched, incorporating many political and social sectors through:
National Priorities and Uganda AIDS Control Project (UACP); National
Operational Plan for Prevention; Poverty Eradication Action Plan/Poverty
Reduction Strategy Paper; AIDS Control Project and more
•The MACA depends on the collaboration of organizations like: Uganda
AIDS Commission; Uganda Ministries of Health,Education, Local
Government, and Gender; People Living with AIDS; World Health
Organization; United Nations (UNAIDS); World Bank; Red Cross and others
•Prevention, education, reproductive health and improved quality of life
were identified as the most important themes for strategic programming
•The professionalization of traditional birth attendants was the strongest
attempt by the government to consider a culturally-appropriate
management policy
