Item Stella Fisher Burgess (1881-1974) obituary(Kalamazoo College, 1974-02)Stella Fisher Burgess graduated from Kalamazoo College in 1905. She would go on to work for the YWCA in Japan where she would meet her husband John Stewart Burgess. Together they would travel to Peking China where they would serve as missionaries. Stella was also a published poet. Some of her poems were printed on the back of her obituary. You can find a copy of her book, "A Peking Caravan" in the Kalamazoo College Archives.Item Selma Maxville Funeral(Kalamazoo College, 1950-02) Gifford, Martha J.Selma Maxville was a nurse that worked alongside Martha J. Gifford, class of 1910, at the Ellen Mitchell Memorial Hospital in Moulmein, Burma (Myanmar). In February of 1950, Maxville had been working in the interior of Burma when she was kidnapped and held for ransom. Mon villagers, who considered Maxville a friend, attempted to rescue her but were attacked by the kidnappers. Twelve villagers were killed including Maxville. This marked a time period of tension for foreign missionaries in Burma.Item Postcard from Burma(Kalamazoo College, 1933) Gifford, Martha J.This postcard was brought back to the United States by Martha J. Gifford, class of 1910, a missionary who served in Burma (Myanmar) for nearly 40 years. Pictured in the postcard is the Shwe Dagon Pagoda, which is considered the most sacred Buddhist pagoda in Myanmar. The Gifford collection includes hundreds of postcards from all around the world and can be found in the Kalamazoo College Archives.Item Burma Missionary Convention(Kalamazoo College, 1958) Gifford, Martha J.Little is known about this picture, but it is presumed to be a convention amongst Baptist missionaries. Pictured in the photo is Martha J. Gifford '10 who served in Burma (Myanmar) and Royal H. Fisher '06 who served in Japan. Included is a list describing who else is in the photo.Item Judson College Sesquicentennial Postcard(Kalamazoo College, 1963-12) Gifford, Martha J.This post card was sent to Martha J. Gifford, class of 1910, who was a missionary in Burma (Myanmar). She received the card from Dr. Ai Lun who was a colleague with Gifford at the Ellen Mitchell Memorial in Moulmein. The post card commemorates the arrival of Adoniram Judson and his wife Ann Hasseltine Judson in 1813, making them the first foreign missionaries to serve in Burma (Myanmar).
