The problem of misinformation and disinformation, and how computer science can combat it
Abstract
Misinformation and disinformation are two distinct terms with definitions that share a similar concept: spreading false information. While the problem of misinformation and disinformation is not new, the use of computers and the Internet has made it easier to spread false information and more challenging to combat it. In this study, I will review the problem of misinformation and disinformation in the digital era and discuss why people tend to believe in false information. I will also propose how computer scientists can help to reduce the spread of misinformation and disinformation through technology and education. Finally, I will present a prototype of one of the solutions, an AI-powered search engine. The goal of this SIP is to highlight that computer scientists can play a significant role in combating misinformation and disinformation.
