Abstract
As the third decade of the 21st century is fast approaching, education and technology have become so intertwined that it has become hard to imagine one without the other. However, in the foreign languages, this relationship has experienced more resistance than in the other academic disciplines. This is due in part to the very obvious shortcuts that machine translation allows students to take when completing language assignments. In addition, research into how machine translation and related technologies can be utilized as pedagogical tools rather than dishonest shortcuts has not been given the attention it deserves. Looking at data collected from senior-standing Kalamazoo College foreign language majors and minors and comparing it to the data from foreign language students at Duke University, we can see that whether it is permitted or not, the vast majority of students are already incorporating machine translation into their studies. From this, it could be said that prohibiting this technology is a fruitless pursuit that cannot easily be enforced. As a result, foreign language instructors have the increasing responsibility of motivating their students to want to communicate in, and independently obtain linguistical precision of the language they are studying. By doing so, they will be able to incorporate machine translation exercises into their curriculum to help further advance their students' control of the language.
