The Claude A. Williams Collection of Oriental Cloisonnê, lvory Carvings, and Netsuke program
Abstract
This program, written by Kalamazoo college students Diane VanderBeke '86 and Joseph Schmitt '86, was created for an A.M. Todd Rare Book Room exhibit. The program describes the collection gifted to the college by Claude Avery Williams (1911-1984). The collection includes decorative arts from China and Japan, namely from three categories: cloissonê, ivory carvings, and netsuke. These pieces combine beauty with practical use from boxes and vases to closures for tobacco pouches and obi.
