Temporal Lobe Epilepsy ( is the most common form of focal epilepsy
About 6 out of 10 people with focal epilepsy have TLE People with TLE have a
difficult time becoming seizure free with just seizure medication. These
medications can however lower the number of seizures and surgeries can
eradicate them. Common causes are prolonged febrile seizures, injury to the
brain when young, or head trauma.
The typical neurological symptoms of TLE include focal aware seizures such
as auras, feeling of déjà vu, fear, panic, and anxiety. They also include focal
impaired awareness seizure such as fixed stares, unusual posturing in an
arm, speak gibberish, or lose their ability to speak in a sensible manner.
Brain imaging in TLE usually reveals hippocampal sclerosis on the MRI. EEG
will show spikes or sharp waves in the tip or front of the temporal lobe when
a person is awake or asleep.
