Abstract
Anesthesia allows for invasive surgical procedures
to be less painful or not painful at all for the
subject. Veterinarians must also consider
administering pre-anesthetic medication to the
patient to relieve pain or anxiety prior to the
procedure along with aiding in a smooth induction
and to possibly use less induction anesthetic
medication. Mean alveolar concentration (MAC) is
the minimum concentration of anesthetic in alveoli
that prevents a pain response in 50% of patients.
The purpose of this study is to compare two
induction agents, propofol and alfaxalone, to
determine if one is more effective than the other by
monitoring MAC, heart rate, and recovery time.
