A look at the German forest kindergarten : the open-air preschool without limits
Abstract
The concept of the kindergarten was created in 1840 when Friedrich Frobel opened the first kindergarten in Blankenburg, focused on constructive games and other methods that he developed himself. Frobel's method was influential until the end of the 19th century, when the ideology of Maria Montessori and Rudolf Steiner spread across Germany. In this essay I explain about the development of kindergarten, start with Frobel's method in the first German kindergarten and describe the importance of hard work. Then I go on with the founding of Waldorf schools in the Weimar Republic in 1919. The central principle in Waldorf schools is that children work with their bodies, thoughts, and souls together. Then I analyze changes during the Third Reich, and the rebuilding of the kindergarten system in Germany today.
