Conformation : an Exploration in Shape, Surface, and Form
Abstract
In creating small collections of vessels through shape and texture, I hoped to make the connection of surface and form clearer to the viewer. As sometimes the body of a form can be lost in the attention to details of functional ware, these collections of large and medium sized vases would allow a viewer the opportunity to observe groupings of forms that were replicated with the intention to accentuate curves, lines, and form. Texture and the surface of these works work in conjunction with the glazes and colors to allow the forms to be elevated in a way that would draw the observer in and create a connection that not only allowed for appreciated but also a physical connection through sight and touch. As there are clear similarities of some forms to another there are some diversity in the way some were grouped together. The collections are grouped with some vessels that share less similarities, however still manage to function together in allowing a gaze and natural flow of observation to take place between the viewer and the art objects. Surface, texture, glaze (color), and form to work in sync to create a connection, this connection may even leave the viewer wondering why such collections work together, or why they were grouped that way to start.
