Perverted Spaces
Abstract
Perverted Spaces began as an investigation of white privilege but evolved into a project of awareness of one’s own whiteness, and the social impact of this whiteness. Through trial and error, reading, researching, and dialogs with professors, Perverted Spaces became a set of five oil paintings that emphasize color, structure, and shadows. The final pieces emphasize the covert aspects of racism of white people and voices the need for deeper self-reflection rather than turning to Black people to solve the problems we created. Perverted Spaces is meant to prompt an inward inquiry and investigation rather than simply explore the indisputable aspects of white privilege.
