Position of Impermanence
Abstract
Positions of Impermanence is a private and public celebration of transformation. Positions spans many mediums, locations, and interactions and explores how we move through destructive transitions. I knew social engagement and conversations were a necessary part of my thesis. The world experienced a global pandemic and social isolation in the Spring of 2020. I saw an opportunity for my thesis to act as a way of connection, contemplation, and comfort during this time. Positions is firmly grounded in my personal values and beliefs. I believe we are fluid and impermanent. I believe it is necessary to dramatically celebrate aspects of our lives that are breaking down. I value conversations that ask how to support ourselves and each other through decay and loss. Positions of Impermanence began with a participatory tattooing project and culminated in a public performance that activated a series of fabric works. I will outline my research, inspiration, process, difficulties, revelations, and questions that defined and influenced Positions of Impermanence.
