The author interviewed 19 student athletes and three coaches to address her research question. “As a woman, I feel empowered by sport, but I also struggle with the “win at all cost” mentality and the “No pain no gain” hyper-masculinist mantra. I see sport as a marker of feminist progress, but equity in sport seemed to be elusive and desperately incomplete. This paper is my challenge to both hypermasculinity in sport and the liberal feminism that seems to be content with synonymizing women’s progress in sport with white suburban women. I am interested in understanding if sport really is empowering for female athletes or if athletes feel a mix of empowerment and disempowerment. In my case, my disempowerment often came from challenging patriarchal norms such as not playing through pain and for criticizing the lack of equity and reflexivity beyond Title IX. My hope is that this paper will provide the framework and space for respondents to speak their sport truth outside of the limiting, discriminatory, and flawed sport narratives.”
