Abstract
In this paper, I focused on the three popular films that were included in #AsianAugust, Crazy Rich Asians, To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before, and Searching. I looked for popular films to analyze that had an impact on Asian representation in Hollywood. I looked for films that had an Asian American cast and that were financially successful and well received. I did my own formal readings and analysis of the films while also looking at the press response to these films. I contextualized the stereotypes seen in these films with the history of the Kim 9 representation of Asian Americans in American films. I also looked at the political ramifications of stereotypes and connected the impact of representation and stereotypes to recent events regarding Asian discrimination. In this thesis, I hope to shed light on the limited and problematic representation of Asians and Asian Americans in mainstream media today.
