My Family’s Migration Story in Poem : Expressing the Latinx Immigration Experience Through Poetry
Abstract
The author introduces her collection of original poems by saying “I want to create a book of poems dedicated to my family which will allow me to interact with the immigrant experience in a personal and intellectual way. Over the years my family has shared some of their experience with migration and their story. I conducted a series of interviews with my family members and learned more about their struggles and triumphs along the way. I offer my family’s experience including my own as a way to think about origin and struggles with moving from one country to another. I’m very interested in learning more about origin stories and the journey from Mexico to the United States. I know that immigration is such a fundamental part to my own persona. The possibilities were endless. However, my parents were able to work hard for the American Dream. However, along this journey I learned that the reality of the ‘American Dream’ was not the way that our lives have actually been. This project is a way for me to connect to my roots. I hope to add to the repertoire of stories that have been told in the past as a symbol of upward mobility from immigrants that moved for a better life.”
