Abstract
The food system that Kalamazoo College participates in has consequences not only for the health of our campus community, but for the health and well-being of those who work within every level of the food system. We seek to take direct action to make our campus more self-reliant, just, and sustainable through creating more opportunities for our campus and surrounding community to learn farming and gardening skills. An unheated hoop house would allow us to significantly increase food production capabilities on our campus. Increasing on-campus food production is critical to the development of the campus as a sustainable institution in alignment with the Sustainability and Climate Action Plan implemented in 2010. Furthermore, a hoop house would allow us to build skills on our own campus that would prepare us to more successfully work on other farms and exchange knowledge with other communities.
