Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship between Denmark's and Africa. Specifically spanning from the historical background involving its role in the transatlantic slave trade through the post trade era and into the present. By engaging in a thorough analysis of the concept known as collective consciousness, and drawing comparisons to present day attitudes and policy in Denmark, a narrative emerges that illustrates an ever present and evolving societal conversation that has continuously taken place in Denmark since the transatlantic slave trade era. Moreover, this work will argue that the imperialist nature of Denmark's relationship with Africa during the trade era was primarily economic and will demonstrate that their present-day relationship remains largely economically based. Finally, by using the economic lens that Danes primarily use to view their relationship with Africa, the links between their present-day relationship and their past relationship will be firmly established and will serve to explain how the conversation has continued to persist.
