In a letter dated September 29, 1998, college president James F. Jones, Jr. wrote to parents of students to address a racist note and dorm room fire that shocked the college campus. After giving details of the two events in the letter, he detailed the actions the college was taking to deal with the situation. Initially the president comforted the dorm fire victims. Then, he and other senior administrative officials met with students of color to listen to their concerns. That evening the president gave a speech to the entire college community to condemn the incidents. After his speech, faculty and staff led small discussion sessions with students to talk about their feelings and to come up with suggestions for creating a safer environment.en_US
