    Call and Response: Rally Across Town

    A rally for the National Day of Action Against Mass Incarceration and Police Brutality was held at Bronson Park on October 22, 2014. Speakers included Patrice Cullors-Brignac and Kalamazoo College student Rian Brown, Class of 2016. Cullors-Brignac at the time served as a visiting fellow at the Arcus Center for Social Justice and Leadership. She is known as a co-founder of the Black Lives Matter movement.     K Students Travel to Ferguson, MO

    Fifteen Kalamazoo College students who were members of the Black Student Organization and the Caribbean Society joined the protests of the death of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri. The students also participated in a memorial to Vanderitt Myers Jr.and other protests during their trip. This article was originally published in the October 15, 2014 issue of The Index.

    Black Lives Matter flyer, 2014

    This flyer was posted on campus by the student group Black Girls Rock! in November of 2014. In that year, the Black Lives Matter movement gained national attention as it protested the deaths of Eric Garner, Michael Brown, Tamir Rice, and others. The following description of the student organization was on the Office of Student Involvement's website in 2014: "The Black Girls Rock chapter of Kalamazoo College is an organization for black women by black women. We will celebrate our identity through various expression and action. We will build community with our sisters throughout campus, Kalamazoo and beyond."
