    Abstract
My senior individualized project proposes that secularism, liberalism, and religious freedom negatively influences Western perceptions of Muslim women's agency while performing pious devotional practices. It suggests that these ideologies inform the contemporary definition of modernity and lead to it being defined against Arab-Islamic culture. This resulted in the development of negative and dismissive perceptions of different cultural traditions.
