Jalmukgaessimneeda : Korean Foods, History, and Eating Culture
Abstract
During my summer in Korea, I kept a detailed journal about my meals and the various experiences I had regarding family and foods. From the start, there were some specific memories that I considered as potential stories for the SIP. Some of these moments did make it into the final version, while others were completely omitted and replaced with other storylines. While I'm not sure if I could ever truly articulate what made me choose the memories that I did, I found unifying themes as I wrote these vignettes and thought about the overall focus of this project. Though I originally imagined my project to center itself more directly on Korean food culture, the focus naturally transitioned into a softer overview of Korean cuisines and eating practices and eventually brought themes of Korean ancestry and family heritage deeper into my writing.
